Xochimilco is perhaps the last known habitat of the wild axolotl, but sightings of these creatures are becoming increasingly rare. Still, there’s hope. Environmental DNA evidence suggests that they are managing to survive, particularly near the restored chinampa refuges, a project that is bringing back a traditional agricultural system, supported by UNAM and Conservación Internacional México. This is improving water quality, supporting local communities and keeping the idea of wild, free-roaming axolotls alive.
