  • ?? Week 6 of SSRP: Empowering Future Health Care Leaders! As part of Hawaii Pacific Health's Summer Student Research Program (SSRP), our scholars visited Pali Momi Medical Center for an immersive day of learning and mentorship. They participated in hands-on Stop the Bleed? training, developing critical emergency response skills under the guidance of General Surgeon Dr. Marel Ver and Trauma Program Manager Matt Wells. The scholars also toured the medical center and got a behind-the-scenes look at how the team delivers lifesaving care to Central and West Oahu. Pali Momi is the only facility in the region offering: ?? Interventional cardiac catheterization ?? Primary Stroke Center services ?? Level III Trauma care ??? The first comprehensive cancer care center in the region The visit also featured a “talk story” lunch with Palliative Care Medical Director Dr. David Kalir and Pediatrician and SSRP alumna Dr. Trudy Hong, where scholars gained insight into careers in medicine and the value of mentorship. Mahalo to these professionals and Pali Momi's leadership team of Chief Operating Officer Gloria Brooks, VP Mat Loughlin and VP and Chief Nurse Executive Robyn Kalahiki for their warm welcome and for inspiring our next generation of health care professionals.

  • As part of their fifth week in the Summer Student Research Program (SSRP), our research scholars explored the many facets of health care through immersive, real-world experiences. At Pali Momi Medical Center, scholars stepped into the world of minimally invasive surgery, learning how to operate laparoscopic and robotic equipment under the guidance of Dr. Marel Ver, Dr. Franklin Lee and Noelani Kohner. They also visited Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, where they: ?? Met with Chief Operating Officer Gidget Ruscetta ?? Toured the hospital with Senior Development Officer Emily Naula ?? Connected with SSRP alumni and principal investigators during an evening networking event. The following day, the scholars gained insight into emergency response during a tour of an AMR ambulance with Paramedic Danny Kao. These experiences gave scholars a firsthand look at the diverse health care environments where physicians lead and serve – from the operating room to hospital administration to the front lines of emergency care.

  • Through our Summer Student Research Program (SSRP), our research scholars gain a well-rounded view of what it means to be a physician – from clinical care and leadership to cultural understanding and community engagement. As part of their experience this summer, our research scholars recently had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Shilpa Patel, Chief Quality Officer at Hawaii Pacific Health, who shared her journey through medicine and into health system leadership. They also visited Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, a vital community health center serving the west side of Oahu. There, they: ? Learned about Native Hawaiian health practices with Nalani Benioni and Dr. Kaliko Chang, ? Discussed upstream medicine with Chief Nursing Officer Cheryl Kozai, ? And explored pathways in medical education with Pediatrician Dr. Kelli-Ann Voloch. Community health centers like WCCHC are essential to expanding access to care and addressing health disparities in the communities they serve. For our research scholars, this experience offered a powerful example of how physicians can make a lasting impact through community-centered care.

  • Dr. Allen Hixon, chief of Academic Family Medicine for Hawaii Pacific Health and chair of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Department of Family Medicine, to share how a new Family Medicine Residency Program on Kauai is helping close care gaps in rural communities. This collaboration between JABSOM, Wilcox Medical Center, Hawaii Pacific Health and the Kauai District Health Office will bring more physicians to the island, where they’re needed most, aiming to grow our local health care workforce and keeping care close to home.
