In The News: Mr. Nirmal Jain, Founder IIFL (India Infoline Group) and Managing Director of IIFL Finance speaks to Business Standard In a freewheeling interview with Anupreksha Jain and Subrata Panda of Business Standard, he said that FY25 marked a pivotal year for the IIFL Group — a year defined by resilience, introspection, and transformation. In the exclusive interview Mr Jain reflected on a challenging year that included the RBI-imposed embargo on our gold loan business in March 2024. The embargo, while unexpected, served as a critical inflection point, prompting a deep-dive into our systems and governance architecture. Key insights from the interview: ?? Compliance Over Convention While certain practices—such as cash disbursals above ?20,000 and centralised gold auctions—were widely prevalent across the industry, we recognised that regulatory expectations must take precedence over legacy norms. Full compliance, in both letter and spirit, is non-negotiable. ?? Strengthening Internal Systems Post-embargo, IIFL Finance undertook wide-ranging reforms: - Instituted structured feedback loops from branches to the board - Enhanced MIS and escalation protocols - Deployed new compliance tracking tools - Engaged KPMG for an independent compliance audit - Strengthened compliance and internal audit teams ?? Feedback on Draft Gold Loan and Co-lending Guidelines IIFL has recommended that for small ticket gold loans, credit appraisal and end-use monitoring requirements be waived to ease operational burdens. For co-lending, a more simplified and flexible framework would help ensure greater financial inclusion without compromising on prudential norms. ?? Growth Outlook Loan AUM is projected to grow at a 15–20% CAGR over the next three years, led by a recovery in gold loans and expansion in MSME lending. ?? Capital Strategy IIFL plans to raise ?8,000–10,000 crore via domestic markets and is exploring $100–150 million from foreign currency loans, DFIs, and dollar bonds. While there’s no equity fundraise planned at the group level this year, IIFL Samasta Finance Limited may consider strategic investor participation to bolster growth and adopt global best practices. Jain said, "As a diversified financial services group regulated by multiple authorities—RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, and others—we have used this period to build stronger systems, strengthen risk management, and reinforce our institutional backbone across compliance, audit, operations, and human resources." ??
