Step inside the Surrealist world of trailblazing collector Pauline Karpidas with a first look at the masterworks of art and design starring in a dedicated auction series at Sotheby’s London this September. It tells the story of a journey of collecting over the course of half a century and beyond, consisting of 250 paintings, sculptures & drawings. All set against a fantastical backdrop adorned with animal prints, a bold palette and bookcases heaving with tomes on art, dreams and philosophy. “The carpets are inspired by the weavers, by their poems, by their words,” says Weaving Poems carpet designer Maryam S. Omar. A collection of 24 carpets created by Omar and women weavers of Bamiyan in central Afghanistan, the hand-woven designs of Weaving Poems are inspired by the natural and cultural landscapes of the Bamiyan Valley and the poems associated with traditional weaving practices. The Weaving Poems carpets are on view at?#SothebysLondon?until 22 August as part of HAFLA: A Celebration of Middle Eastern Art. Turquoise Mountain Creative Director?Thalia Kennedy PhD?joins Sotheby’s specialist?Alexandra Roy?in the galleries for a first look. The selling exhibition is organized by the UK charity Turquoise Mountain Trust in a series of events marking their 20th anniversary. Their work with artisan communities in Afghanistan is generously supported by the?Qatar Fund for Development,?Alwaleed Philanthropies?and partners around the world.

The founders of design and architecture studio?Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors, who guest-edited?CULTURED Magazine’s July/August Hamptons edition, have created memorable spaces from the Boom Boom Room to The Met’s British Galleries to their restaurant?La Mercerie. The latest venture from Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch is a restaurant inside Sotheby’s new headquarters at 945 Madison Avenue. Taking inspiration from Marcel Breuer’s celebrated Modernist landmark, the new restaurant will reflect the duo’s ability to translate timeless traditions into a modern context. Jane Birkin’s original Hermès Birkin bag – the very piece that inspired a fashion icon –?made history, achieving an extraordinary €8.6 million ($10.1 million). ? The bidding opened at €1 million and in that instant, the previous world record for a handbag was shattered. What followed was an exhilarating global competition, with bids pouring in from around the world – online, on the phones, and in the room. ? In the end, this cultural touchstone was acquired by a private collector in Japan. A fitting tribute to a legacy that has shaped the worlds of fashion, craftsmanship, and collecting. ? Over the past seven years, the representation of women artists in the global auction market has grown significantly, both in visibility and value. From a modest 6.2% share of total auction sales by value in 2018, women artists reached a peak of 13.8% in 2024 - with over 1,100 women artists featured in major auctions last year. This progress reflects a gradual, yet meaningful, shift in market dynamics as museum institutions, collectors, galleries and auction houses increasingly seek to address the under-representation of women artists in today’s global art market. Still, parity in sales and representation is still some distance away, and regional disparities continue to shape market access. Jane Birkin’s original Hermès Birkin bag created a sensation at Sotheby’s Paris today, as it sold for €8.6 million ($10.1 million). After weeks of anticipation and a global tour, the bidding opened at €1 million ($1.7 million). With that single bid, the world record for a handbag — set in 2021 by the Hermès White Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Retourne Kelly 28 at $513,040 — was instantly eclipsed. In the end, the handbag that changed fashion history was met with applause as it sold to private collector from Japan.

The summer sale season has drawn to a close at Sotheby's London, with the Modern & Contemporary, Modern British & Irish, Ceramics, and Old Masters auctions achieving more than ￡108m. ? It was particularly exciting to see women artists take centre stage in our Evening Auction, with Tamara de Lempicka's 'La Belle Rafa?la' commanding the top price of the night and Jenny Saville's 'Mirror' setting a new auction record for a drawing by the artist. ? The Sydney Denton Collection also sold for more than double its low estimate, bringing the overall total to ￡1.8m – complete with a new auction record for Dame Magdalene Odundo. ? Another standout moment came with the sale of a recently rediscovered work by J.M.W. Turner in the Old Masters Evening Auction. Unseen since 1864, the extraordinary early work soared to more than seven times its estimate, selling for ￡1.9 million. ?
